Girl In The Cocoon

Girl In The Cocoon is an original play and the first musical to be made by San Antonio-based theater non-profit, New Works. This show is a satirical comedy that we hope will bring a bit of joy and fun back to San Antonio after what has been a hard year for everyone. Written by primarily queer and young artists, this show hopes to create something completely new and exciting art that is aimed at those who wish to see new, diverse, and queer narratives in Theatre.

Girl In the Cocoon is set in a dystopian future run by media corporations, where humanity seeks escapism from the bleak world around them through endless streams of content. In this world, there are groups of mutated humans, called specials who due to their beautiful mutations are paraded around for entertainment. Our show follows the workers at Happy Life Inc., one of the powerful media conglomerates that produce content made by Specials with the intent to bring joy and wonder back into people's lives. We follow the newest content creator ‘The Girl In The Cocoon’ who joins Happy Life Inc. as their underdog creator. Alongside two other specials, The Frog & The Spider, they try and find success in a system that will either be the key to their success or their demise.

This show aims to be something that feels like a mixture of a real-life cartoon and a sci-fi movie. The character designs for the mutated humans aka specials are especially important. From Frogs, Spiders, Cats, & Cocoons the costumes will be enchanting to see with prosthetics, costumes, and makeup. The set will be a neon sci-fi dream and together with lights and sound should be spectacular to witness. This show is meant to be something unlike anything San Antonio has seen before and we plan to make it accessible to all by recording and uploading the show to youtube after its run.
